LGBT Detroit at 30

PRESERVING 3 DECADES OF LEGACY

LGBT Detroit, North America’s leading Black LGBTQ+ organization, will spend the next year as a run-up to its 30th-anniversary celebration of delivering quality resources and needed services to the full spectrum of the Metro Detroit area’s sexual and gender diverse communities. From this spring through the fall of 2024, the agency will be honoring its past while focusing on what lies in store through public events and campaigns leading up to its birthday in October of 2024.

More Ways To Give For LGBT Detroit at 30

voices of movement members

LGBT Detroit is celebrating 30 years of our commitment to a mission with our celebration culminating in October of 2024. Our journey would not be complete with the support of prominent movement members. We asked the question, “How has community saved you.”

Hear their stories below:

Todd Shaw

The Detroit LGBTQ community from the Men of Color Group, to the Full Truth Unity Fellowship Church, to LGBT Detroit (formerly KICK) — made me first aware of the enormous power of being who I am and loving myself just as I am. Thank you. I love you all.

Tim Retzloff

As a white gay Flint kid from a barely working-class family, community provided me a safe haven in which to belong, grow, and expand my understanding of our LGBTQ+ world.

Dr. Vicki Golden, MA, MSA, EDs, PhD

Community saved me, empowering my dreams. Support, acceptance, shared experiences: my strength. We can embrace our true selves, pursue dreams fearlessly, strive for a diverse, inclusive world. Together, we flourish.

Dr. Truman Hudson, Jr.

LGBT Detroit provided me with a safe and supportive space to leverage my Allyship to help ensure that the inalienable rights of our family members, friends and colleagues in the the LGBTQ+ community are realized.

Dr. Debraha Watson, PhD, LRRT

The Community has enhanced my visibility as an elder. Providing opportunities to bridge generations, cultivating relationships with those younger which is important for the preservation of our history and future.

Kahan Sablo, D.Ed, MS, MSW

Adodi empowered me with wholistic affirmation. I was no longer SGL OR Black - I was affirmed as “whole.” This “wholeness”motivates me to share the gift of community with others.
